What Does an Oxygen Sensor Do?

If you've ever looked at your exhaust system, you've probably seen parts that look like spark plugs. They're oxygen sensors. What they do is figure out whether your exhaust's oxygen levels are right -- that way, your engine can determine how much fuel it should consume.

How Long Does an Oxygen Sensor Last?

Usually, a long time. Newer oxygen sensors can last anywhere from 50,000 to 60,000 miles to as many as 100,000 miles. Unfortunately, for them to fail is common. It often happens because the sensor has gotten dirty, itself the fault of motor oil or fuel. Luckily, when to replace an oxygen sensor is straightforward: when you start to have problems with them.

What are the Signs of a Bad Oxygen Sensor?

There are two main symptoms:

  • A lit Check Engine light on the dash
  • A reduction in fuel efficiency

The latter is more telling. It indicates that your engine may be burning too much gas, suggesting it isn't getting the right feedback on fuel consumption from the sensor. If you replace any and you're still having trouble with them, check your vacuum hose. It may simply require reconnection.

Otherwise, check all your sensors. Your vehicle can have two to four, and there's usually one per exhaust manifold. Some models may even have one just after the catalytic converter. To figure out whether they're the problem, get an inspection or run one yourself by plugging in a code reader.

If any need changing, it's a simple job to do. Simply unscrew the old and screw in the new. You can buy genuine OEM oxygen sensors online, too, right here at our auto parts store. They'll come guaranteed to fit your Honda or Acura. Order today!
