The Honda CRX, also called CR-X, is a sport compact liftback that was produced by Honda from 1983 to 1991. In other markets, it was also marketed as the Honda Civic CRX. For the US market, the CRX was sold as a K-tail or Kammback, with its distinctive downward rear slope sharply cut off. This allowed the CRX to reduce aerodynamic drag. Honda produced about 400,000 units throughout its run, with annual US sales ranging from 26,000 to 66,000.
Three trim levels were available for the US, namely DX or standard, HF or “high fuel efficiency”, and SI or “sport injected”. With the 1991 Honda CRX HF, the engine was a 1.5-liter I4 that produced 62 hp and 90 pound-feet of torque. The SI trim was built with a 1.6-liter I4 engine that produced a boosted 108 hp and 100 pound-feet of torque. Both trims came standard with a five-speed manual transmission.
Why Are Honda CRX So Popular?
The Honda CRX was redesigned for the 1988 model year, and it was known for its performance, agile handling, and terrific fuel economy. With the new design, the rear had a heavily stippled black glass panel installed right above the taillights, improving rear visibility. Other features included a power-sliding sunroof, 14-inch alloy wheels, a rear anti-sway bar, rear wiper, and 4-wheel disc brakes.
How Many MPG Does a Honda CRX Get?
The 1991 Honda CRX HF posted great gas mileage numbers, especially for its time. It was rated for 44 mpg highway, 36 mpg city, and 39 mpg combined.
