What Does a Control Arm Do?

It connects the frame or body of your vehicle to its wheel assembly or steering knuckle. Its outer end attaches via a ball joint. Sometimes, the joint is permanently fastened. However, it can also be pressed on or bolted in. The latter enables changing the joint if you ever have to.

Control arms also have rubber bushings. They allow the arms to swing up and down. This helps keep the ride as smooth as possible when going over bumps and potholes. When everything works together properly, your wheels stay on the road. When things don't however -- when a control arm gets damaged or just plain wears out from use and age -- it can bend (if not break). That will make any vehicle unsafe to drive.

How Can You Tell When a Control Arm Goes Bad?

The primary signs are:

• Brake drift over uneven terrain
• Popping or clunking noises
• Loss of some control while driving

They usually indicate one of two issues: worn ball joints or torn bushings. Both can result in the complete detachment of your wheels and suspension. To make sure that doesn't happen, put your vehicle on a hoist and do a full inspection. Do one at least once annually.
