What Pulleys Does a Vehicle Have?

Your Honda or Acura, for instance, has two main types: crank pulleys and accessory pulleys. Most are driven by a main crank pulley, which is bolted to your vehicle's crankshaft.

How Does a Car Pulley Work?

It's not particularly complicated. As your engine runs, its crank pulley rotates, transferring the resulting motion to the following other pulleys via your serpentine belt or V belt:

• Accessory pulleys: these help run your alternator and power steering pump.
• Idler pulleys: a combo of a free-spinning cylindrical mechanism and a bearing. These sometimes stand in for accessories entirely. Sometimes, they're parts of your serpentine belt system.
• Tensioner pulleys: also called drive belt tensioners. These work similarly to idler pulleys, but also use spring-loaded parts to help maintain proper belt tension.

What are the Signs a Vehicle Has Bad Pulleys?

Symptoms differ for each kind of pulley:

• Signs of a bad crank pulley include a vibrating engine, alternator failure, power steering pump failure, transmission damage, and irregular engine idling speed.
• Signs of a bad idler pulley include visible wear, squealing, a damaged bearing, and pulley damage.
• Signs of a bad drive belt tensioner include grinding, squeaking, abnormal belt wear, and belt-driven accessory failure.
