Your vehicle's distributor sends current from its ignition coils to its spark plugs. More importantly, it does it in the proper firing order and at the proper intervals. Your distributor cap, however, is a cover. It protects the parts of a distributor while helping it maintain contact between its internal rotor and the wires of your spark plugs. Unfortunately, neither distributor nor distributor cap lasts forever.

What are the Signs a Distributor Rotor and Cap are Worn Out or Damaged?

They're easy to spot. They include:

  • Cracks in its housing
  • A broken wire tower
  • Carbon tracks or burns on the distributor cap's terminal

What are the Symptoms of a Distributor Rotor and Cap Going Bad?

Watch out for several. They include:

  • A Check Engine light on the dashboard
  • Strange engine noises
  • Engine misfires
  • A vehicle that won't start

To try to catch them early, be sure to inspect both your distributor rotor and distributor cap during routine tune-ups. That's about every 25,000 miles. When to replace them is just as straightforward: every 50,000 miles or so, at least. However, consult your owner's manual to be sure.

When it's time to buy new distributor caps, be sure to get genuine OEM. They'll fit your Honda or Acura factory distributor best. You can order one online right here at our auto parts store. Buy now!
